Our people make Hutchison Technologies a great place to work and we’re pleased to shine the spotlight on another member of our talented team.

In our latest Meet the Team feature, we meet Senior Software Project Lead Curtis Menmuir. We asked Curtis to tell us a little more about his role and what he enjoys most about working at Hutchison’s.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I was born in Perth but have stayed in and around Dundee for most of my life. I went to Menzieshill High School before graduating from the University of Dundee with a degree in Applied Computing. Over the years, I have built and still maintain a number of websites for a wide range of companies, including my own T-shirt design company. In my spare time my passion is music. I’m a musician and began playing the guitar when I was 10 years old. I enjoy going to live music concerts and festivals, and currently play in a local band.

Tell us about the main aspects of your role.

As a Senior Software Engineer, I am responsible for developing code for the products that we build in-house. On top of writing code, my daily responsibilities include investigating new technologies and frameworks; making project architecture decisions; planning project releases; writing automated tests; and liaising with external customers, designers and other project stakeholders. I have previously worked on the HiiT app project; developing a tablet application to control creating, running and sharing workout schedules across a chain of operators clubs and gyms. I have recently been working on a medical training app for an antipsychotic drug that we have been outsourced to build for Johnson & Johnson.

What’s the best thing about your job?

The best thing about my job is the freedom to investigate the bleeding-edge technologies that we use to develop our in-house projects. In RND (research and design), we look for the best tools and frameworks to help drive the quality of our products forward and this includes working with some excellent open-source projects. I have also had the opportunity to contribute to some of these community projects, which is a great feeling to be able to give something back to the open-source world.

What makes you stay at Hutchison Technologies?

I have been with Hutchison Technologies since January 2019 and I enjoy the level of input that I have into the projects that we work on in RND. I take great pride in my work and I have the opportunity to ensure the projects I work on are delivered to the highest standard. We have a small close-knit team in RND and it’s a great environment for us to build products to take the company forward into the digital world.

If coronavirus is a teacher, what has it taught you?

Coronavirus has really put things into perspective for me as it has highlighted some of the key areas of life that we take for granted. I come from a large family and it has been hard to go so long without spending time with them, and my friends. Covid-19 has also highlighted the importance of technology in the modern world, and the role it has to play in our future.
